TRAVEL TO MOVIES: MAJOR GROM: PLAGUE DOCTOR

Director: Oleg Trofim
Cast: Tikhon Zhiznevskiy , Lyubov Aksyonova , Dmitriy Chebotarev , Alexander Seteykin , Sergei Goroshko , Oleg Chugunov , Mikhail Evlanov , Kystoner , Daniil Steklov , Vitaliy Khaev
Plot: When a masked vigilante's killing spree throws a city into chaos, a renegade detective and his rookie partner are the only ones who can stop it.

My Movie Review: The movie is explosive unexpectedly good superhero movie from Russia  and better than most of superhero movies giving you that extra spice on execution and a kick:) Major Grom: Plague Doctor isn't your typical choice of movie you chose though you should give it a try cause it's worth the ride and may take you on another level you didn't realize exist:) Grom has no superpowers, save for his ability to keep his flat cap on all times, and a talent for vividly imagining how scenarios could play out (similar to Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes), which offers several fun rug pulls yet even more exciting cause you don't know what will he do! It's quite nice surprise a Russian film but one that looks like a Hollywood blockbuster and that's a compliment the film has good art direction and features big action scenes that are not crude! A mixture of Batman, The Joker and V for Vendetta with a dash of stylistic comedy makes this Russian movie an entertaining watch just how they put together is awesome and quite a blast:)

Critic Reviews: Major Grom: Plague Doctor has the modern look and feel of the MCU's or Batman films, and its cast represents themselves well in stock roles. Don't expect depth here, but it's pretty entertaining. The script is nonsense-in-motion. The set-pieces are noisy, messy deployments of such like Bugs Bunny Physics that aren't the most exciting or visually coherent chases/fights I've ever seen. Major Grom overcomes familiarity with a fascinating and upbeat story that will have fans of the comic craving more. Tikhon Zhiznevskiy plays Igor as a man wary of everyone, confident in his ability to win any fistfight, and always, always droll to a fault. It’s all very much more subtle than the typical portrayal of a loose cannon cop more studied than brash and Zhiznevskiy’s performance lends some gravity to Igor that Major Grom‘s formulaic script doesn’t provide. Expect some derivative content, but the St. Petersburg setting for Major Grom: Plague Doctor is novel, the hero v. villain arc have a twist or two up its sleeve:)

TRAVEL TO PLACES: PHILIPPINES-- GREENWICH

My Personal Experience: I went to Greenwich SM Pampanga Branch this year June 1, 2022, by myself for the fifteenth time! TRAVEL TO MOVIES: FEAR STREET PART ONE: 1994

Director: Leigh Janiak
Cast: Kiana Madeira , Olivia Scott Welch , Benjamin Flores Jr. , Julia Rehwald , Maya Hawke , Charlene Amoia , David Thompson , Darrell Britt-Gibson , Ashley Zukerman , Fred Hechinger...
Plot: A circle of teenage friends accidentally encounter the ancient evil responsible for a series of brutal murders that have plagued their town for over 300 years. The film follows a group of few teenagers in Shadyside who are terrorized the town for centuries.

My Movie Review: The movie is goodie scary with some sauce in the past it's finger licking and easy to digest kind a scare nice start to a trilogy waiting to unfold giving vibes to anticipate! Fear Street Part One: 1994 is so good its praised by the LGBTQ+ community for its accurate representation of a lesbian couple, instead of making the characters' story revolve around sexuality and gaining acceptance: Deena's relationship with Sam its built throughout the story:) Fear Street is slick not unaware of the shoulders of past slasher flicks on which it stands not the best series of all time, but definitely very fun and worth watching!! I really enjoyed it. I loved the aesthetic of the films, and the plot was fun and quite original, with many unexpected twists! There were a few moments when I had to facepalm because the characters were being stupid, but let's be honest if people in horror movies aren't a bit dumb we wouldn't have horror movies! A real Shadyside, Ohio exists, but thankfully the violent history depicted in the films is fictional the movies are based on R.L. Stine's popular Fear Street book series made for teen to scream!

Critics Consensus: Fear Street Part One: 1994 kicks off the trilogy in promising fashion, honoring the source material with plenty of retro slasher appeal. Deena and Sam's romance is a push-pull between two paper-thin characters whose relationship never gains the contours that make you care about its survival. 1994 leans very much on recognizable nostalgia to build a sense of place-hell, the movie opens at a mall!-before getting into the bloody business at hand. A nasty, eloquent effective slasher... The film oozes confidence. Plays like "Scream" meets "Stranger Things" built on a supernatural premise sturdy enough to sustain interest and suspense over nearly six hours. Neither the story nor the characters have enough weight to make “1994” feel like anything other than a retro slasher knockoff. Fear Street encapsulates what made 90s thriller movies so popular. If I had adolescent nieces or nephews, I would be plopping them in front of the tv with popcorn so we could talk about it afterward. This easy-to-swallow conceit lets Fear Street gleefully, bloodily romp around the mass market paperbacks it honors. While Fear Street certainly has that cookie-cutter Netflix gloss to it, it still manages to provide enough thrills and unique surprises to make it a worthwhile entry into the horror genre:)

TRAVEL TO MOVIES: PRIME TIME

Director: Jakub Piątek
Cast: Bartosz Bielenia , Magdalena Poplawska , Malgorzata Hajewska , Dobromir Dymecki , Michal Kaleta , Cezary Kosinski , Olga Milaszewska , Adam Nawojczyk , Juliusz Chrząstowski
Plot: On New Year's Eve 1999, an armed man enters a TV studio during a broadcast, takes the host hostage and makes one demand: to give a message live on air. On last of 1999, 20-year-old Sebastian locks himself in TV studio. He has two hostages, a gun, important message for the world. This story of the attack explores a rebel's extreme measures & taking last resort:)

My Movie Review: The movie is a ticking bomb that didn't explode the anticipation on what's gonna happen next is more thrilling rather than the final moments I don't remember how it end! Prime Time is strikingly captivating as interesting premise with great thrilling moments, though it may alienate viewers who expect a more elaborated storyline the hash rush acts make room! I like about this ordeal its the intensity of the man's action who wants attention of the public what's the message he wants to cross I don't remember either but tense moments I got carried away and calmness poise of the female anchor under immense pressure truly stood out to me! Variety could say a slick but hollow hostage and I agreed as the star of 'Corpus Christi' returns as another antihero, Jakub Piatek's debut feature give him little to rebel against inner demons! Is Prime Time a good movie kind of in the middle when its good its really good a 5/10, Prime Time by Jakub Piatek is his great directorial feature debut as  he film touches upon the issues of incompetence of those in charge in tough situations, mass media, and displays Poland's picture at the beginning of the new millennium nice to see such engagement with so possibility!

Critic Reviews: Slick, watchable but ultimately somewhat pointless too facile to be anything beyond a ghost of a compelling idea. The thematic intent has legs, but not enough. A stunning central performance does a lot to rescue what the film's screenplay lacks. While it's an occasionally refreshing look at a hostage crisis, "Prime Time" is unfortunately understated to the point of being nearly anonymous. Prime Time Jakub Piątek is his great directorial feature debut. he film touches upon the issues of incompetence of those in charge in tough situations, mass media, and displays Poland's picture at the beginning of the new millennium. Out of this simple premise, Piatek spins a 90-minute thriller that, despite being low on conventional thrills, still manages to be engaging throughout. What works for the film is the director's ability to use the confined spaces to bild a sense of unease. Not quite able to connect its ideas about the damaging effect of mass media and systemic rot, the film ends up feeling like being trapped in a two-hour hostage situation. The beauty of Prime Time, beyond the fine central performances, is how little of is spelled out, preferring hint subtle reminders to an upcoming blatant exposition!

TRAVEL TO MOVIES: GOOD ON PAPER

Director: Kim Gatewood
Cast: Iliza Shlesinger , Ryan Hansen , Margaret Cho , Rebecca Rittenhouse , Britney Young , Tony Rodriguez , Taylor Hill , Kimia Behpoornia , Christopher Nicholas Smith , Adam Lustick ()(
Plot: Andrea Singer always put her stand-up career first, and while dating came easy, love wasn't a priority that is until she meets Dennis, a quirky nerd with disarming charm who coaxes her into letting her guard down. Her best friend Margot isn't convinced he's all he seems and she urges Andrea to embark on a wild goose chase to uncover who Dennis really is. Based on a mostly true story.

My Movie Review: The movie is such a smart smirk very witty in giving us a version of mostly unfiltered moments of what happen unusual in very simple set-up rom-com with an edge bites!! Good On Paper is winner in my book didn't expect to be this good on first look come out as lame but a tweak over there turns this around something new to offer in a familiar atmosphere:) A career-focused comic meets a seemingly perfect guy, but starts to suspect the joke's on her in this smart, charming semi-autobiographical tale in this soo fun mostly based on a true story:) The plot was pretty straightforward and predictable it's just a woman being scammed by a guy who's clearly a scammer as Comedian Iliza Shlesinger turns a story from her dating life into an entertaining, if inconsequential movie of utterly charming as this dramatized version of herself:) Margaret Cho goes over the top in this Netflix comedy Good on Paper, mugging and delivering lines too emphatically and Ryan Hansen surprise us with a dark side despite sun-like vibe but movie still belongs to Iliza Shlesinger, whose undeniably talented and overflowing with humour!

Critics Consensus: Writer-star Iliza Shlesinger finds some laughs in real-life romantic travails, but Good on Paper makes an overall awkward transition from stand-up to screen. As an "anti-rom-com," hijacking the genre's rhythms without adhering to the rules of the game, Good on Paper is fine. As a satire of showbiz vapidity, it's decent. It's not nearly as subversive as you want it to be. Iliza Schlesinger takes a familiar premise and spins it with stand-up comedy reminding girls sometimes what is good on paper is a hot buttered mess waiting to be exposed. As a stand-up routine it may have worked, but some material is best left to the stage! Shlesinger makes an engaging lead, charismatic and thought-provoking if not often laugh-out-loud funny. In her directorial debut, comedian Kimmy Gatewood handles the brittle material well, but it is the screenplay and the actors who make it a squirmingly good comedy. Despite the movie's darker aspects, Gatewood and Shlesinger escape with some decent laughs and pointed questions. Good on Paper may have a standard set-up, but writer-star Iliza Shlesinger quickly reinvigorates the so regular romcom plot with her signature style and comedic stylings:)

TRAVEL TO MOVIES: SECURITY

Director: Peter Chelsom
Cast: Marco D'Amore , Maya Sansa , Fabrizio Bentivoglio , Silvio Muccino , Ludovica Martino , Valeria Bilello , Giulio Pranno , Tommaso Ragno , Beatrice Grannò , Antonio Zavatteri , Gaia B
Plot: In winter Forte dei Marmi transforms and the villas that inhabit it become small fortresses guarded by sophisticated circuits of surveillance cameras. But when the apparent tranquility of the town crumbles and fear creeps into the houses and people so what is the price of security?

My Movie Review: The movie is awesome I'd recommend it not bad turned out it's good after taking a job as a mall security guard, a former Marine steps up to protect a young girl who's being hunted by heavily armed mercenaries as it goes along it shows us there's more to come! The film set as picturesque roll in the posh Tuscan seaside town of Forte Dei Marmi, wrapped just before lockdown as the move plot could be interesting but it gets messy and confusing pretty quick so a lot of stories tie together somehow but the resulting mix makes little sense! Adult themes as in things adults think are interesting this one an original film with universal themes about how we all reach bad conclusions while sleepwalking through life watch it good! In the end, Roberto decided to end his conflicting marriage with Claudia and moved to Elena's house. Walter was killed by the police, who thought he was going to attack him with the knife! But it was a staged act by Walter to die because he was scared to kill himself so need caution:)

Critic Reviews: Despite its forgettable title, Security (Netflix) proves to be a tightly-constructed drama about the secrets people keep, and how the guy that wired the whole town to keep interlopers outside ends up learning too much about what goes on inside. In this picaresque Italian resort town, the obscene behavior is coming from inside the house. Directed with a sure hand and offering more than a few notes of sleaze and mystery, Security is an interesting look at how people harbor their real truths in the modern age of surveillance. Isn't brisk enough to be a thriller, and the stakes never seem that high. But it walks that tightrope between intriguing and well we have to see how this turns out without ever losing the plot turning boring. Security made me feel insecure as a sort of Italian-language James McAvoy, Silvio Muccino plays the dreamboat writing professor with the out-of-control libido with aplomb. He’s all band-collared shirts, running his fingers mean through his long hair as he smokes cigarette in the classroom!!

TRAVEL TO PLACES: PHILIPPINES-- KUYA J'S RESTAURANT

My Personal Experience: I went to Kuya J's Restaurant in SM Pampanga Branch this year May 5, 2022, by myself for the eleventh time, I have to say I'd enjoy this dinner cause I went all out after watching a full length movie I found myself walk into unexpected dinner when I'm just looking for dessert Kuya J's Halo-Halo in particular but in that day isn't available so I went for it!

TRAVEL TO MOVIES: XTREME

Director: Daniel Benmayor
Cast: Teo García , Óscar Jaenada , Sergio Peris-Mencheta , Óscar Casas , Alberto Jo Lee , Andrea Duro , Luis Zahera , Nao Albet , Andrés Herrera , Cesar Bandera , Jose Álvarez-Boze
Plot: Two years after the murder of his son and father, a retired hitman along with his sister and a troubled teen sets in motion a carefully crafted revenge plan against the killer: his own brother his lethal stepbrother.

My Movie Review: The movie is upscale to its genre always feel as a new Netflix action thriller that takes place in the Spanish underworld that breath freshness for its cut-throat slick turn up:) Xtreme in this fast-paced and action-packed thriller, Daniel Benmayor of "Tracers" directs this action thriller set in his hometown of Barcelona Spanish action extravaganza x martial arts film! To me a movie like Xtreme is an unapologetic action thriller if you view it as such, it's solid entertainment, just don't expect the story to meet your bias standards or flourish on your terms! Love the impact it brings you as a viewer have to be alert cause in an instant someone will get shot in the head as in a glimpse everything can change in a precise moment caught off guard:) We occasionally need those minimalist actioners that focus more on the thrills than the plot! Xtreme is one such but that said, it may overlook as shallow because the story isn't quite strong as the action but what it has a basic formula to success to satisfy our adrenaline needs! Like most cliche endings of all revenge action films, the protagonist killed the antagonist! Maximo and Maria pierced Lucero's heart and head, the parts Lucero often gambled with other people, before killing them, thus a poetic justice, of sorts immensely gratifying John Wick-style!

Critic Reviews: "Xtreme offers a youthful, Spanish spin on a familiar premise." Amplifies the representative elements with style, dark humor, and murderous pizzazz. Xtreme (Netflix) crests on a wave of henchman body counts, but as a revenge thriller it also elicits strong work from its single minded cast. The story and dialogue is admittedly weak but Xtreme is a typical popcorn munching summer flick. It may not be overly memorable but it is an xtremely fun watch while it lasts. Revenge is a dish best served cold. But when it comes to the big screen, the production line is red hot with new thrillers to recycle this age-old idea. This is a bombastically violent but thoroughly enjoyable revenge fantasy action movie. Maximo, the made-man with a mean streak played by stunt-man/actor Teo García a brutally efficient killer. The movie he conceived and others built around this character is a standard-issue mixed martial arts/mob revenge tale...far less efficient. Xtreme is under no illusion over what sort of film it is though. It’s an unashamedly simple, well-shot action flick that leans in hard on the action and fighting but does at the expense of an original story. Xtreme delivers that in (pun intended) extreme doses!!

TRAVEL TO MOVIES: CARNAVAL

Director: Leandro Neri
Cast: Giovana Cordeiro , Nikolas Antunes , Bruna Inocencio , Gessica Kayane , Durval Lelys , Micael Borges , Lipy Adler , Rafael Medrado , Samya Pascotto , Flávia Pavanelli , Jean Pedro
Plot: After a break-up, an influencer takes her friends on a trip to Bahia's vibrant Carnival, where she discovers life is about more than just social media likes.

My Movie Review: The movie is such a easy watch enjoyed it a lot having fun seeing this four friends explore the festivities and side hustle flirting love interests like I went to a trip with them! To give you run down here's what Carnaval's about after a particularly brutal break-up with her Instagram famous boyfriend, Nina (Giovana Cordeiro), herself a budding influencer, gets the break and swag she's been posting for: an all-inclusive trip to picture-perfect Salvador, Bahia, just in time for Carnaval, with all its parties and chances to dress up for her. The same day her friends Mayra (Bruna Inocencio), Vivi (Samya Pascotto) and Michelle (Gessica Kayane) rally to lift her spirits, she gets some exciting career opportunity to join hunky pop sensation Freddy Nunes (Micael) and fellow influencers for the Carnival at an all-inclusive resort Salvador, Brazil. I notice she follow another famous influencer a girl she adore but things didn't quite turn up the way I expected thankful the massive parade towards the end when she went to the float and lost friends hand in the midst of the crowd enjoying the festivities make a quite memorable act!

Critic Reviews: Its broad comedy and thoughtful themes aren't completely cogent, due to a lack of properly motivated character developments and questionable scenarios. Carnaval is like Girls Trip by way of Brazil, but the acting and many of the comedy's punchlines are fairly over-exaggerated. This frothy film about the #lifelessons an Instagram influencer learns during Carnival in Brazil is as superficial as it sounds, but its postcard-perfect setting and gorgeous cast are easy to watch. As shallow as its influencer subject matter, Carnaval isn't overflowing with depth. For better or worse, it feels like a true modern era social media era rom-com. It's all harmless, if pretty much charmless. Carnaval wants to like, say something about superficiality and stuff, but never really gets beneath the surface of its characters or situations. 'Ibiza-Like' 'Girls Trip' Like its bright and colorful imagery, “Carnaval” is more of a lighthearted story about friends taking a vacation and growing closer together. The movie's strengths lie in its bouncy, breezy, exhilarating energy, capture colorful flavors of the culture, community and atmosphere!!

TRAVEL TO MOVIES: ARMY OF THE DEAD

Director: Zack Snyder
Cast: Dave Bautista , Ella Purnell , Omari Hardwick , Raúl Castillo , Matthias Schweighöfer , Theo Rossi , Ana de la Reguera , Tig Notaro , Huma Qureshi , Garret Dillahunt , Steve Corona
Plot: After a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantine zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted. With the abandoned, walled city of Las Vegas overrun with zombies after a disastrous government fault, billionaire casino magnate Bly Tanaka realises he has left something behind in Sin City: $200 million. But for the time being, his mountains of cash are safe behind an impenetrable casino vault. Now Tanaka is willing to pay $50 million to decorated former mercenary Scott Ward and his hand-picked team crew to retrieve the money before the US President nukes the entire city!

My Movie Review: The movie is too cool one of the most anticipated summer blockbuster last year as aggressive zombie action elevates its genre popping scheme with unexpected façade! Army of the Dead is tricky as most of us focus on the zombies we didn't realized the robots on it until we wonder the mystery of blue-eyed zombies the simplest explanation is the blue-eyed zombies aren't zombies at all, they are actually robots that are living in the zombie kingdom of Las Vegas, at first' it seems like a fluke that somehow got through post-production in a glance:) Army of the Dead manages to provide ample escapism for a two-and-a-half-hour zombie film Zack Snyder delivers his zombie heist flick but falls predictable pitfalls despite a promising plot! The heist part heighten in opening the vault by cracking the code's precise locks in tuck this nerve cracking moment is one of the best adrenaline pump scene as zombies come rushing in! Army Of The Dead is best when Snyder leans into the fun and allows himself moments of pure silliness like that as when he aims for emotional territory get depth in touch your human nature!

Critics Consensus: An ambitious, over-the-top zombie heist mashup, Army of the Dead brings Zack Snyder back to his genre roots with a suitably gory splash. While Snyder’s obvious creative freedom adds some bloat to the story, you have to love his vision and his commitment to it. And as far as big blockbustery popcorn entertainment goes, Snyder delivers exactly what he promises. If nothing else, Zack Snyder knows how to craft a stimulating visual tableau and he knows how to put on an extravagant show. 20 minutes in you'll be able to tell if you're with 'Army of the Dead' or not. Death comes for us all, and if we're fortunate, it's a very slow walker. Enjoying "Army of the Dead" doesn't require much more than appreciating that. Our collective starvation for thrills and wonder probably sauces its appeal even more. Working with the Netflix charge card, Snyder has a ball proving that trash can triumph on the largest stage if played with elan and enthusiasm. Turning the volume up on everything you expect from a Zack Snyder film, it would have looked better in a cinema but will become a cult hit for those who cant get enough survival horror. Army of the Dead is a touch too long, but thanks to aggressive action and surprising touching father-daughter-focused story, Snyder’s zombie epic entertains:)
