TRAVEL TO MOVIES: AGAINST THE ICE

Director: Peter Flinth
Cast: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau , Joe Cole , Heida Reed , Charles Dance , Diarmaid Murtagh , Gísli Örn Garðarsson , Nick Jameson , Þorsteinn Bachmann , Frankie Wilson , Árni Lárusson
Plot: Against the Ice is a true story of friendship, love, survival, and the power of the human spirit as two men (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Joe Cole) trek unknown parts of Greenland on a harrowing expedition that changed history.

My Movie Review: The movie is cold yet warm delivers all the delirious period drama thrills and survival horror angst that you could want from a movie with that title fill up me some chills:) Against The Ice is based on a true story of two men who didn’t hesitate to take the journey to explore Greenland’s vast landscape. It was a part of Denmark’s 1909 polar expedition where they set an example of true friendship, love, and courage. I loved their conversations and most importantly their strength to fight with the polar bear without flinching an eye. I equally admired their way of surviving but in the later months, they started hallucinating a lot and cracked conversations while running ideas in their brain if their loved ones are dead or alive. A fantastic film in every respect brilliant and on-location photography in one of the wildest, harshest, most challenging yet beautiful climates and scenery in the world. Every aspect had obviously been thoroughly researched, especially that of surviving despite deprivation, storms, near-starvation and other near-disasters that have been inevitable in Arctic exploration expedition it's hardcore! Although its mostly enjoyable one and impressive first half honestly it lost me towards the middle or the latter part though not quite as gripping as it could have been given the intensity of the situation, but charged with just pacing scenes and incredible phenomenon I still quite find myself underwhelm I don't know if got boring it deserves a better second half rather a safe one!

Critics Consensus: Against the Ice isn't the most original or exciting wilderness thriller, but viewers in search of man-versus-nature entertainment could easily do worse. Considering the epic nature of the trek, the film did feel rather pedestrian. This one is interesting because it plays out in a very particular way that actually has something to do with what's happening today. A tense encounter with an angry polar bear and a phantom hot air balloon are highlights during the endless plodding across the frozen wilderness. Many unforgettable moments of tension and deprivation will surely grip the audiences’ attention. However, the slow and sloppy pacing ultimately makes the movie a bit shaky. While it may lack the overall tension you might expect from a movie like this, the film still does a good job immersing you in its story and setting. A tropey but fairly watchable survival drama... The first half of the survival tale is engrossing and tense. The waiting around in the second with some questionable visual psychosis without the dread softens its overall impact. Although the scenery is beautiful, the action is solid rather than spectacular, and viewers of ice-bound adventures such as TV's The Terror and The North Water will know what to expect. If only a good cast was enough to salvage a plodding, tedious film from the snowy wreckage. Based on the autobiography, Against The Ice shows the grim reality of what it takes to cross arctic tundra & does a smooth job. Against the Ice has many rewarding qualities but faults threaten to throw as film off course!

With its name accurately depicting its location, cafehoppers will have no trouble finding the space. If you look at their Instagram profile, they also have a second name called Eclipse. So, the big question is, are they called 51 Tras or Eclipse? Well, turns out Eclipse is a project name that the owners of Tanjong 51 Tras created because they view their space as host for people and things to come together, align and create an experience together!

TRAVEL TO MOVIES: RESTLESS

Director: Régis Blondeau
Cast: Franck Gastambide , Simon Abkarian , Jemima West , Michaël Abiteboul , Tracy Gotoas , Victoire Zenner , Serge Hazanavicius , Michaël Perez , Nabil Missoumi , Laurence Briand (inf)
Plot: After going to extremes to cover up an accident, a corrupt cop's life spirals out of control when he starts receiving threats from a mysterious witness.

My Movie Review: The movie is so cool in visual effects this is a decent effort in that aspect! Corrupt cops that we somehow root for but not en this movie starts off well and delivers a good story, ok we have to suspend belief at times but all in all, this is well worth a watch with excess! Restless is a 2022 French action thriller film directed by Régis Blondeau, written by Régis Blondeau and Julien Colombani and starring Franck Gastambide, Simon Abkarian and Michaël Abiteboul. It is based on the 2014 South Korean film A Hard Day by Kim Seong-hun. At the beginning of the movie people can wonder about the mysterious dead body on the road the story is a mystery but then great thriller movie! The director created the forms and the colors to create an atmosphere uniquely exhilarating; creating a necessity to know and find out what is going on in the story and what is the following events that it brings along with him. And then without realizing it, we suddenly get caught inside the film mystery and intrigue. The film itself creates an environment that is grisly. Under cover of night Thomas returns to his mother's grave and exhumes Barcelo, bringing him back to the boatyard where he was seemingly living with the dog. After plugging in Barcelo's phone it rings and Thomas answers, but the man on the other end realises it isn't Barcelo and hangs up! A film that slightly takes you deep inside a world of despair, revenge and anger, in a search for something we are intended to understand!!

Critics Reviews: Restless is rewarding enough in its cat-and-mouse game between a corrupt cop and his even more corrupt cop adversary to forgive its issues with pace and tone. Restless begins at a fever pitch and has almost no place to go from there. Everyone featured is involved in foul play. “Restless” bounces around, seemingly unsure of what kind of movie it wants to be. Or maybe it does know but can’t quite bring this elements together in satisfying way. Restless made me wonder why I am expected to feel sympathy for the bad guy. Or even follow him, for that matter. Restless takes its time moving its pieces into place. But once it clatters into gear and gets moving as the dirty cops versus even dirtier cops thriller it’s aiming to be, there’s a kind of glee in getting to root for the dirty lawman who’s stepped into an even bigger pile of shit than he ever created personally. To get there, you have to accept that the guy who decided to hide a corpse inside his own mother’s coffin is actually a decent dude who deserves a break from the audience. But once Thomas is locked into his battle of wills with Marelli, a guy who wears his evil-doing like a topcoat, Restless becomes a race to the bottom of a corruption scheme that’s too big to fail. Shocking death blow down at the port facility re-created wholesale from the film being remade, and Restless has its dark thriller elements in place enough to make up for its sluggish beginning, Desperate, he stuffs the body in his trunk. Even more desperate, he then manages to finagle the corpse into her coffin alongside his mom that shock!

TRAVEL TO MOVIES: DON'T KILL ME

Director: Andrea De Sica
Cast: Alice Pagani , Rocco Fasano , Silvia Calderoni , Fabrizio Ferracane , Giacomo Ferrara , Anita Caprioli , Sergio Albelli , Federico Ielapi , Esther Elisha , Kateryna Aresi , Marco Boriero
Plot: After Mirta dies of a drug overdose with her lover, she resuscitates alone and discovers she's part of a violent world she never knew existed.

My Movie Review: The movie is a good spin on the zombie genre it's so refreshing how come up with some elements that's cool to see despite so negative views I like their take with a style! This film reminded me of a mixture of Warm Bodies and The Corpse Bride but without the humor and this kind of movie with that swag rarely come by this days. It got straight to the point brining our title character back alive for a forever love with her boyfriend. The plot and cast both did excellent in portraying the story and I liked the overall tone. Gore and the way that the transformation were done were good, I'd like to see more unique raw take like this in the future! Don't Kill Me is a nice surprise love how clever it is in creating a world that we long to exists I thought it was a creative movie, very interesting and written well and it plays with the emotions a little but well done such a great movie although I don't remember the latter part, don't know how it ends otherwise its cool to show imaginations run wild create an exhilarating experience:) It's your average stylish, film noir-esque bad romance zombie flick. It succeeds at some of these elements & in some ways it does it quite well. Don't Kill Me doesn't only usher in a new era of zombie horror; it's a blockbuster special effects and power performance from the two leads level up the stakes in staying alive and keeping focus mind on what's happening to them!

Critics Reviews: Don’t Kill Me is two things at once and only really sure of a portion of itself. It’s a tragedy that can’t give up its romanticism and it’s a thriller that doesn’t fully deliver on its action’s potential. It's more style than substance, and the style isn't enough to carry the action. Rotten score. Don’t Kill Me can’t freshen a stale concept. Don’t Kill Me begins with a halfway-decent vamp-zomb hybrid concept, but soon becomes chronically infested with go-nowhere world-building that turns the movie into a collection of half-realized episodes teasing Stuff To Be Explored In A Sequel. And a lot of that is the ABC gum of screenplays: Long-standing battle between secret factions of humans and post-humans, the veteran unreadier showing the newb the ropes, unresolved romantic yearnings, etc. It’s as predictable as it is nonsensical, the latter mostly because it leaves plot strands to dangle, ostensibly confident that they will be picked back up in the next movie. It plays like a TV pilot that didn’t get picked up. De Sica shows enough visual acumen here to render the film a viable genre exercise, but he fumbles a climactic action sequence in which Mirta discovers the full extent of her violent capabilities. His work teeters on the edge of being something good, but it never achieves anything beyond a nice shot here or a savvy cut there – brief flashes of promise. He’s ultimately hamstrung by this fragmented screenplay, which shows little interest in being a standalone story. There’s a fine line between hopeful and delusional and Don’t Kill Me shows-- 49/51 balance between the two!

TRAVEL TO MOVIES: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE

Director: David Blue Garcia
Cast: Sarah Yarkin , Elsie Fisher , Mark Burnham , Jacob Latimore , Shintaro Shimosawa , Moe Dunford , Nell Hudson , Jessica Allain , Olwen Fouéré , Sam Douglas , John Larroquette
Plot: Melody (Sarah Yarkin), her teenage sister Lila (Elsie Fisher), and their friends Dante (Jacob Latimore) and Ruth (Nell Hudson), head to the remote town of Harlow, Texas to start an idealistic new business venture. But their dream soon turns into a waking nightmare when they accidentally disrupt the home of Leatherface, the deranged serial killer whose blood-soaked legacy continues to haunt the area's residents -- including Sally Hardesty (Olwen Fouéré), the sole survivor of his infamous 1973 massacre who's hell-bent on seeking revenge.

My Movie Review: The movie is sloppy and gratuitous killing spree with standout deaths but a poorly written story that ruins the experience. Leatherface deserves better. Believe it or not, Texas Chainsaw Massacre is another cautionary tale about gentrification and pure gore horror! I was honestly quite impressed with the cinematography, production, and pacing of the first half, despite the silliness of the plot that was clearly a way of setting up a smorgasbord of fodder for Leatherface and boy does he take advantage were we learned so much of him! Though the humanization of the character was palpable and refreshing, that all disintegrates in the second half as gone wrong, where the movie follows every horror trope and then one-ups it with the stupidest decisions, most obvious plot holes and some laughable absence of realism! In the first half however we have typical local hick who's expected to be one of the antagonists but lo and behold he's actually a great guy, I enjoy the good and the bad, the suspense, gore but sadly, Texas Chainsaw Massacre suffers from a lot of problems, I am not confident about it! Many of the shots were visually stunning especially the scene in the sunflower field, were just shy of beautiful in a grisly way even its quite hunting there's some subtle struck in its stillness! The whole bus scene was both funny in a satirical way, disturbingly gruesome, and yet what preceded it made absolutely zero sense, if only the flick stuck to its guns with the deviations from horror norms it could've been a solid installment in cesspool of a series working together:)

Critics Consensus: Texas Chainsaw Massacre doesn't skimp on the gore, but Leatherface may have irrevocably lost his ability to terrify. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 is a gnarly movie but is otherwise uninteresting in some ways, boring. The cash grab attempt, specifically, is quite blatant. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is so shallow and meaningless that any subtext is impossible. It just wants to get to the killing, it doesn’t care what it has to do to get there. Texas Chainsaw Massacre completely ruins the original, and any fan of that movie should steer far, far away from its latest installment and hope that the franchise will now stay dead and buried for good. This Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot/sequel is the best out of the bunch, even though saying so isn’t much. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is filled with bloody kills, and as the title promises, a massacre inside a party bus soon follows in the movie. Brings Leatherface into a contemporary story, rather than keeping him stuck in decades passed, echoing Hooper’s film in the most important ways by holding focus on socioeconomic issues and Leatherface’s queered identity. The comparison of today's influencers to the hippies of the original film is tremendously entertaining. It tries to be cool and modern yet unfortunately does the opposite, creating jam-packed 83 minutes of uninteresting, try-hard cheese, its completely unnecessary:(

TRAVEL TO MOVIES: FISTFUL OF VENGEANCE

Director: Roel Reiné
Cast: Iko Uwais , Lewis Tan , Lawrence Kao , Pearl Thusi , Jason Tobin , Francesca Corney , JuJu Chan Szeto , Yayaying Rhatha Phongam , Simon Kook , Selina Wiesmann , Nikola Mitic
Plot: A revenge mission becomes a fight to save the world from an ancient threat when superpowered assassin Kai tracks a killer to Bangkok.

My Movie Review: The movie is a fistful of guacamole you eat when it's fresh but having hard time finishing it with a mashed of punches that counterflow didn't delver the impact it supposed to hit leaving you with all the crumbs and juice to dip' you settle to spread the action till the end! Fistful of Vengeance is a hit and miss have a kick-ass start that's nice to see with fancy lights it felt elevated then the somewhat refuge camp felt homey and some of the fight scenes were promising and to some extent were extreme but the fight to save the world is not felt seems it has lesser scope than what it promise that's why a bit dissapointing the cast were amazing and a lot capable of producing more engaging and worth seeing actioner if the storyline have more depth towards the last parts could have great follow up to bad it didn't unleash its full potential:( It has fleeting moments where things come together but is often a dramatic waste of the talents involved weak film that's rushed, chaotic and full of clunky exposition, bad one liners and poor visual effects on some parts that should have been better making the latter part forgetable one! Primary villain is Ku An Qi, Dr. Pan's twin sister, holder of the second amulet half, and queen of the Bangkok underworld who's formidable opponent against the Wu Assassins, sending wave after wave of assailants against the Wu team until the Interpol agency is forced to intervene too bad don't remember how they defeat her and that says a lot, all of a sudden their on the beach!

Critics Reviews: A movie in duration only; its pretty slapdash in terms of its execution, even during its glossy-looking action set pieces. Fun action packed, short run time, wonky cgi, some plot holes but great set designs, cool gadgets and lots of ass kicking. If you prefer your action movies sexy, rather than brutal, look no further, “Fistful of Vengeance” is definitely the film for you. Wu Assassins: Fistful of Vengeance could've and should've spent more time on creating a more coherent story with original characters and little less time on the fight choreography. With a more engaging story that did more than settle for merely being average, Fistful of Vengeance could have been a real contender instead of being a passable and forgettable distraction. It’s the kind of thing that plays well as an evening’s diversion on Netflix, but doesn’t ever rise above the level of “just another good mid-tier actioner." You can tell that the plot and the character arcs weren't the focus here, and that's fine until it starts raising more questions than youd like about who's who and what's what. But Fistful of Vengeance is undeniably generous in its action. An action packed and exciting movie with great fight choreography. The exposition laden adventure segments can be a slog to get though, but then the next brawl comes up and will suck audiences right back in. There's still a lot of mileage in the continuing saga of the Wu Assassins, but Fistful of Vengeance is unfortunately something of a rough patch but for keeps:)

TRAVEL TO MOVIES: BIGBUG

Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Cast: Elsa Zylberstein , Isabelle Nanty , André Dussollier , Claude Perron , François Levantal , Alban Lenoir , Youssef Hajdi , Dominique Pinon , Sebastien Gill , Claire Chust , Corinne Martin
Plot: In a quiet residential area, four domestic robots suddenly decide to take their masters hostage in their home. Locked together, a not-quite-so-blended family, an intrusive neighbor and her enterprising sex-robot are now forced to put up with each other in an increasingly hysterical atmosphere! While, outside, the Yonyx, the latest generation of androids, are trying to take over. As the threat draws closer, the humans look elsewhere, get jealous, and rip into each other under the bewildered eyes of their indoor robots. Maybe it's the robots who've got own soul -- or not!

My Movie Review: The movie is a satire that can quite be polarizing either you like or not, I'm leaning more on the like side despite its oddball presentation there's something genius about it! Bigbug is one of the most quirky yet highly enjoyable if not slightly creepy movies I've watched in with great effects and a unique story bit of sci-fi, robot mutiny, and eclectic storytelling! Fantastic performances by the cast and a great soundtrack that's been well scored, I like their creepy Yonx androids as they were super evil and very scary not everyone will enjoy the fun! This was cool to me it's a French movie so I watched it with subtitles as the performances are better but there is an English dub that actually changes the way it feels especially the androids! Almost like watching a tweaked version of the original as it feels way more menacing I highly recommend it if you like unique movies, French is the way to go though there's something rare! Bigbug is ultimately a very smart, singular piece of film-making, a sparkling comedy that lifts the spirits and dazzles the eyes as written by Jeunet and Guillaume Laurant, Bigbug filmed on a single stage set, delivers artificial-intelligence suspense with doomy vibe' just like Cassandra! It's a hugely clever and engaging film that defies expectations with a sly warmth that sneaks up on you it's smart enough to temper comedy in a tense robot uprising exposes humanity's flaws!

Critics Consensus: Jeunet fans will find the whimsy they seek within BigBug, although it isn't enough to make this mishmash more than intermittently engaging. It is part dystopian drama, part comedy farce. Full of child-like imagination but surprisingly horny... And yet, Jeunet must have performed some form of alchemy because all of these elements work well together. No one grows. No one changes. Bigbug is a French sci-fi comedy from the director of beloved movies, and the propensity for Rube Goldberg devices and absurdity play to the strengths of a story about technology run amok. Netflix’s oddball film Bigbug is bonkers, for better or worse! Probably worse. Big Bug is a total disaster: conceptually, cinematically, and narratively. Went on for too long with the same nonsense and bug me by becoming increasing unfunny! "Bigbug" yearns to be so strange with every grotesque high-angle close-up, every wacky development, and it certainly achieves that thick air of strangeness. Here, Jeunet’s bright colors and prankish manipulation of space makes a suburban home and its lookalike environs an appropriate carnival atmosphere. Big Bug turns a spiritual and political pandemic into a three-dimensional funhouse mirror. Wacky! What is what it is. I would say this isn't masterpiece' but very amusing!

TRAVEL TO MOVIES: ANNE+ THE FILM

Director: Valerie Bisscheroux
Cast: Hanna Van Vliet , Jouman Fattal , Jade Olieberg , Eline Van Gils , Anne-Chris Schulting , Jesse Mensah , Thorn de Vries , Huib Cluistra , Ayla Satijn , Romana Vrede , Jacqueline Blom
Plot: Under pressure to finish her novel and move to Montreal for her relationship, a 20-something lesbian in Amsterdam searches for what she wants in life.

My Movie Review: The movie is surprisingly good and very personal it's a touching tale of young queer love and the complications that come along with it, very casual feel to the movie, feels like watching people you may know, exceeds my expectation thought quite a hidden gem! Anne+ The Film is provocative doesn’t shy away from sexy stuff, presenting us with intimate, tender sex scenes for our leading lady and a relaxed attitude towards the nudity as one whole:) I found the movie incredibly well acted and way too close to home whether your queer or not, never seen anything so close to our lives on film before that moves seemlessly it is absolutely amazing cause it's funny, it's heartwarming, the story never goes bad even there's ocstacle! Anne is a cool funny beautiful character, the production quality is pretty good, the soundtrack is nothing wild and the writing, at some times lack but good visuals make up for it as long as the characters worked and the plot was sometimes too chill as I would recommend this to anyone:) If you haven’t seen the series that preceded Anne+: The Film, you’ll still be able to jump right in; the film does a nice job at recapping and also tosses in some flashbacks for good measure! The young ensemble helps to bring this version of Amsterdam to life, so natural and effortless that some of film feels documentary-like. Coming-of-age stories often get caught up with the teen years, but there’s a whole different coming-of-age that happens in your twenties, and Anne+: The Film sums it up perfectly. There might not particularly thrilling or monumental that occurs in Anne+: The Film, but it feels real, a chapter from one young woman’s story that many of us can relate, whether we’ve walked down all the same paths or not' it's presented in truths:)

Critics Reviews: I’m perfectly satisfied with Anne+: The Film goes. It has a fun time, great characters and relationships, some of the most explicit sex scenes in a feature film, and so much for going for it.You might enjoy Anne’s company for ninety minutes, but she’ll be like an acquaintance you make on a plane; fine to pass the time, but you’ll forget their existence by the time you’ve picked up your bags. If you’re looking for a movie that feels like the experience of hanging out at A-Camp, Anne+ is for you. One Audience Review: I sincerely don't think there is a better made queer/lgbt film than this one! You can tell that the cast is familiar in and with the scene so all the messages really come across and make for a realistic portrayal. I'll agree! Things are changing quickly for the lead  Anne (Hanna Van Vliet), the twenty-something living in Amsterdam and putting all her energy into writing a book. Her girlfriend Sara (Jouman Fattal) moves to Montreal for a job and the two agree to open their relationship, though once Anne knows Sara is seeing someone else, she begins to feel a bit uneasy about it. Anne is set to join Sara in Montreal in just few months, but she’s plagued by second thoughts about it, wondering if it’s the right call to follow her overseas. Thorn Roos de Vries makes quite the impression as Lou, the nonbinary person Anne first sees performing as a drag king and forms a bit of a crush on. It’s hard to believe that Lou is the nonbinary character in a Dutch movie, but they feel right at home in the world of Anne+, that' thanks to Thorn de Vries’s natural, charming performance:)

TRAVEL TO MOVIES: INTO THE WIND

Director: Kristoffer Rus
Cast: Sonia Mietielica , Jakub Sasak , Waleria Gorobets , Sebastian Dela , Marcin Perchuc , Agnieszka Zulewska , Sonia Bohosiewicz , Grzegorz Malecki , Marta Ojrzynska , Jakub Kuzia
Plot: Waves, sunshine and passion await when a privileged teenage girl experiences first love with a free-spirited kite-surfing instructor at a seaside resort.

My Movie Review: The movie is a very beautiful art with picturesque shots that's refreshing to see it's about the emotional states of people after the loss of a loved one or the fear of being oneself, of seeing oneself as one is but so nice to see Polish seaside from the point of view of kitesurfing enthusiasts like Michal who looks good doing it such vibe, cool breezy kind of guy:) Another good thing is that Ania the main character is rather average looking girl with fish eyes but a bit of musical talent it's making the scenes more loving and warm in a cold night or a day! Into The Wind is no rush and take slow there's a moonlight chemistry of being blue calling that there's more to life we'll have to enjoy I love how relax it is free flowing and free spririted like anything goes you doesn't anticipate on what's to come but living in the moment as it come' up! It's like you ask for a light but we've started a wildfire a beautiful love story with good actors that a run mile, lost in feeling but give us time to breath the air and feel the blue waves breeze:) I love the freedom this film has it really wants to tell something doesn't need lines because it's all in the expression of the actors, the play of silences is simply magnificent to understand and for the interlocutor like it's in real life very natural sometimes we speak through our eyes/brows!

Critics Reviews: Into the Wind is fine, but by being so clearly a homage to a beloved and iconic film and missing the mark on nearly every element of what made the original special, it, unfortunately, has little wind beneath its wings. In all, this is a movie that never needed to exist, but its existence doesn't hurt anyone. There's real chemistry here, so its a shame there isn't much of a movie. Into the Wind is a light watch that doesn't have a lot of innovation but is still warm and fun. Into the Wind, a 2022 Polish romance, is a gentle story about a rich, sad girl who falls for a handsome windsurfing instructor at the luxury resort. It actually juggles themes of grief, identity, and mental health quite gracefully, painting its characters and their pain with careful detail. Into the Wind, like so many of the international, youthful romances that hit Netflix, takes its time with the story it tells. There aren’t really any frills, or any attempts to reinvent the wheel, but it works anyway. There's a dreamy, warm quality to the film, a sincerity that resonates even when some scenes outstay their welcome or feel a little unnecessary. But the chemistry between Sonia Mietielica and Jakub Sasak is electric; it’s impossible to look away from these two. Into the Wind‘s setting does a lot to help make the film feel as dreamy as it does, but it’s these young lovers who make it sing. Into the Wind might be a slow burn and a tad overlong, but has a mesmerizing quality to it, and the performances feel grounded and real!
