Plot: Led by a warrior named Andy (Charlize Theron), a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it's up to Andy and Nile (Kiki Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary. . Based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Greg Rucka and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, Beyond The Lights), The Old Guard is a gritty, grounded, action-packed story that shows living forever is harder than it looks come think of it:)
My Movie Review: The movie is tight about centuries old warriors with regenerative healing abilities who use their vast experience to help people a comic book reference that come to life!! The Old Guard is big in action that kick-ass with thrilling fight scenes and slick characters that's compelling but the story-line is sub-par a lost potential it's a good idea, good actor casting and good set pieces yet there were just so many clichés, cringe and naive moments that shouldn't!! I really want to like this movie might be the biggest summer blockbuster this year and one of the best action movie in Netflix but somewhere in the middle didn't like where the story headed it become tasteless and predictable in a sense hope the upcoming sequel has better trajectory! Charlize Theron is cool in short hair with undeniable star quality and charisma that could walk the room casting her was a great move she makes the movie look expensive one thing I don't like is her ancient warrior look I think I saw that look before in another movie it doesn't suit her:( KiKi Layne is a stand-out in a way the newest soldier to join their ranks with back story in the military and now one of the immortal she's big reason why this movie works and still a success!
Critics Consensus: The Old Guard is occasionally restricted by genre conventions, but director Gina Prince-Bythewood brings a sophisticated vision to the superhero genre - and some knockout action sequences led by Charlize Theron. If sequels are made with the same equal mix of character-based narrative and kick-ass action, then The Old Guard could represent the next franchise to become excited about. Charlize Theron is terrific in this hugely imaginative, bone-snappingly violent action-fantasy. In drawing our attention to who these characters are as opposed to leaning upon the awe-inspiring moves they can pull off, movie opts to be a rich with emotional resonance as opposed to lousy with quips and explosions! Hampered by convention, but definitely worth a look. There's an indescribable affection for and among the characters in Prince-Bythewood's films that never feels contrived, here it imbues even action-packed tale with very real sincerity. Prince-Bythewood invests the heroes' solitude with keen melodramatic pathos, but it's merely a grace note to a sluggishly paced plot, thinly imagined characters, and rote shoot-outs. The Old Guard successfully fills the void left by the lack of blockbusters this season with a solid action feature its fresh vision make this saga work!
